As Pet Stories enters it’s SEVENTH year (crazy!), our founder and lead photographer Emily looks back through the archives, and reveals why every pawrent should invest in some forever photos with their best pal.

  1. Photos that are unique and reflect the routine you share with your pet

I’ve learnt over the years, that in order to get truly unique photos that reflect your pet’s personality - I must become invisible to the subject (the pet being photographed). I want the animal to ignore me and be completely themselves, with their focus on their owner. So I’ve developed a few little tricks which mean I’m able to capture photos that document your pet’s personality, the relationship you share and any parts of your routine or lifestyle that are meaningful for you. Photos that hold actual memories that you will want to cherish and look back on.

I love how not one pet shoot is the same and that’s all down to your pet being their adorable, cheeky selves. These photos are of Sonny, a nervous Romanian rescue dog, who had some photos with his mum Laura at their favourite walking spot in the Cumbrian hills. We took our time, let Sonny do his thing and I just watched him through my lens zoom through the heather, having the time of his life. One of my favourite ever shoots!

2. Marking a chapter in your life

Ask my friends, family and even my clients - I’m a very sentimental person, which means I’m forever freeze-framing special moments, or holding onto meaningful knick-kacks . For me, pet photos are of course filed under ‘something truly special’ and I feel, booking a pet photographer, is just as important as having a wedding photographer to document your big day.

In the time I’ve been a pet photographer I’ve come to realise that not only are pet photos special, due to the little time we have with our pets (relative to our lifetime), but also because they mark and represent a particular chapter in someone’s life. Time goes all too quickly and as someone who has experienced pet bereavement, not only are you learning to say goodbye to your best friend, but you are coming to terms with having to close the door on a part of your life and embark on the next one. Having pet photos documents a part of everyday life to look back on and think of ever-so fondly.

3. Photos that have YOU in them

The likelihood is, your camera-roll is 99% photos of your pet. But how many of those photos feature you both together?

All to often, I have pet owners coming to me saying ‘I’m the one taking all the photos’ or ‘I have plenty of the dog, but none of us all together’. Not everyone loves having their photo taken, so I can understand it might feel a little daunting, but I promise having candid photos of you and your best pal, out on your favourite walk will be the most special keepsake for years to come.

Your shoot is candid, laidback and unforced - nothing to worry about, just like any other day spent with your pet, but this time you get some great photos at the end of it.
